What is a Barcode Scanner?


A barcode scanner (also sometimes referred to as a barcode reader) is a piece of electronic equipment that can read printed barcodes.

Barcodes are used to manage and track a wide variety of items, ranging from grocery store items to cars to insects such as bees. A barcode scanner uses a lens, light source and photo conductor to translate optical impulses to electrical impulses.

What are the main types of barcode scanners?


Fixed Position
Barcode Scanners

A fixed position barcode scanner is used by distributors and manufacturers. This type of barcode scanner can be used on a conveyor to automatically process cartons or pallets as they pass by the scanner.

Handheld Barcode Scanners (pictured)

A handheld barcode scanner is one of the types of scanners that are most commonly seen. Store assistants use this gun shaped scanner to checkout items being purchased by customers. This is also widely used in industrial environments.

In Counter Scale/Barcode Scanners

The in counter scale/scanner is the retail barcode scanner your grocery items are slid over at the checkout.

Hands Free Barcode Scanners

The
hands free barcode scanner is usually mounted on the counter and the assistant swipes the items barcode to be purchased past it.
